LUCY PIKE

Birmingham, ALABAMA, USA

My art is an exploration of the intersectionality of motherhood and the natural world, navigating questions about environment, place, and the search for balance between risk and exploration.

Informed by habitat theory, I traverse the emotional vistas that nature invokes within us: opportunity, danger, and refuge. My work seeks to explore and meditate upon these concepts and boundaries: how do we return to becoming a part of our own world rather than apart from it? Intersecting with this framework for examining our relationship to the natural world, the labor of motherhood is itself a study of prospect-refuge theory. Itis a precarious intertwining of openness and protection, of fear and hope. I explore these ideas and sensations through layers of ink that imbue a kind of raw simplicity to the work, investigating both the inner and outer manifestations of environment. I am continually probing the interconnectedness of the feminine self and the natural world.

Through her abstract work, Lucy Pike explores the amorphous nature of human identity and our interconnectedness with the natural world. Working primarily with ink, she probes questions relating to the interwoven nature of inner and outer environments. Her paintings express both the strength and softness she has discovered through motherhood and seek to embody he rinterpretation of the feminine experience within the wider natural world. An avid reader and gardener, Lucy also loves to hike and explore. She lives with her family and rescue pets outside of Birmingham, Alabama.
