Juniper Rag presents these accomplished artists, who have submitted artwork in the spirit of darkness.
Welcome our guest Curator, Amanda Kidd-Kestler, who selected artists for curation. Choosing is a complex process, and with each themed call, the subject matter should fit within the scope of that theme. The curator brings a world of personal experience and their selection reflects that evolving experience, combined with insight and keen eyes for skill, talent, process, execution, purpose and overall presentation. From all over the world, this group submitted to our call for art, which was dear to our hearts. We love this season and really get into the spirit of the season as the summer near the end, The trees drop their leaves and the darkness creeps in so early in the afternoon. Juniper Rag is based in New England, one of the oldest settled areas of the country. We do realize our cities and states are “new” compared to Europe. Boston was settled in 1630 by the Puritans, yes, hundreds of years after the development of European cities.
The ethereal nature of the season inspired the theme, however it can also be interpreted politically, emotionally or spiritually, however the artists sees fit to represent “darkness” in their work. The rise of mental illness awareness and the destigmatization is also very relevant, as depression and other disorders plague so many people. We are hoping this call for art will shine light on the artists and their processes.

Amanda Kidd-Kestler,
Executive Director, The New Hampshire Arts Association
Amanda Kidd Schall is an artist and arts organizer originally from Sag Harbor, New York. An alumnae of Clark University, Amanda is an internationally-recognized professional art framer, in addition to teaching printmaking classes at her alma mater as an adjunct professor. She served on the Worcester Arts Council from 2017-2019 and was a mover and shaker in the Worcester art scene before moving back to New York. Using printmaking, photography, sculpture and mixed media, Amanda creates artwork that explore themes of femininity, sexuality, art history, and the environment. Her work has been displayed in the Worcester and Fitchburg Art Museums, as well as in many galleries regionally. She now lives in Dover, New Hampshire and is happy to call New Hampshire home.
