MARTHA WAKEFIELD

Belmont, MASSACHUSETTS, USA

The slip is a recurring theme in my work embodying grief and loss.  We still feel the aftereffects of lost pandemic years, lockdowns, and fear of the unknown.  This body of work seeks to capture that sense of unease.  The vibrancy of the red slip echoes a former world.  Its scantiness reveals the current fragility of our existence.  The rules of living are forever changed.  How can nature offer respite, when the seas are turbulent, and the forests are on fire?  We venture out seeking solace but remain guarded expecting the wolf to emerge from the foreboding woods.

I use the camera to weave these stories of darkness and simultaneous beauty in our surreal world.  This slip reveals the drama unfolding each day as one experiences the increasing ubiquity of death.  These are stories of our new broken reality.
