An Artist Statement | Juniper Rag

Al Weems is an accomplished photographer, living and working with Parkinsons Disease (PD).

Stillness of the camera is a must for a photographer, so work poses inevitable challenges that Al must face continually. His tool is integral to his work, so effective use means never-ending strength and patience. Creative problem solving and virtually an evolution in his process must take place and it must evolve. Compromises have to be made and as an artist, pivoting into the unknown can be formidable. Adjustments and adaptations with everyday tasks have to be considered and accepted. Living with movement in your body as an artist could be an insurmountable experience, unless you embrace, accept and allow a new process to unfold. In a series of losses and changes, one constant is the support Al has received throughout the stages of Parkinsons from family, friends and even strangers. For Al, using a camera calls for new ways of doing things, of course, but small every day tasks must also be addressed constantly.

Between personal and professional life, this emotional growth and the act of successfully conquering challenges is now a part of life, with components that all tie into each other, overlapping and becoming stronger as a result.

Al’s work, “String Theory” represents his personal reflection of how these variables are all connected. As humans, we persevere together in the face of obstacles, as individual artists we must figure out how to continue work that is important to us, sometimes asking for and accepting a hand. Our need to work drives us through as therapy. The entirety of the experience is a creative coping process.

Al Weems accepts, makes adjustments and through this diligent practice, his work continually connects the viewer and shows a deeper understanding of the human condition.

Thank you so, so, so much. I absolutely appreciate your words, support and encouragement always. I am truly blessed. Al Weems

Telling your story connects viewers.

It is very difficult to write about your work with words when it is visual. A well-written Artist’s Statement and Bio are essential and also the root of your most powerful art marketing tools possessed as a professional artist. The best statements are simple expressions of why and how your art gets made.

A true connection example:

When you see Louise Bourgeois’, Spiders you may wonder why she made them. Without the statement, they are just large metal sculptures of spiders.

“I’ve drawn my whole life. My parents were in the tapestry restoration business, and as a young girl, I would draw in the missing parts of the tapestry that needed to be re-woven. My ability to draw made me indispensable to my parents.

I came from a family of repairers. The spider is a repairer. If you bash into the web of a spider, she doesn’t get mad. She weaves and repairs it. ‘The Spider’ is an ode to my mother. She was my best friend. Like a spider, my mother was a weaver. . . Like spiders, my mother was very clever. Spiders are friendly presences that eat mosquitoes. So, spiders are helpful and protective, just like my mother.” —Louise Bourgeois
